EU-ASE warns of back-tracking on efficiency promises

May 31, 2011

The European Alliance for Saving Energy (EU-ASE) today warned Energy Ministers against using budget constraints as an excuse for backing away from promises on energy efficiency. Energy Roadmap 2050: ad hoc group starts work

May 15, 2011

In preparation for the Energy Roadmap 2050, to be published later this year, an Ad Hoc group has been created by the European Commission to provide advice on modeling Europe’s energy path to 2050. The mandate and membership of the group are both available. The Coalition was happy to welcome this initiative, but proposed a focus on energy savings, and the addition of further members with expertise in the area – and the Ad Hoc group’s membership has since been expanded to include Felix Matthes (Oke Institute), one of the names we suggested. The group met for the first time earlier in May, and will provide a report to the Commission after the summer.

Coalition at Sustainable Energy Week

April 12, 2011

Speaking during the opening session of Sustainable Energy Week on 12 April, the Coalition for Energy Savings has issued a strong ‘wake-up call’ to the EU’s leaders on energy savings. Fiona Riddoch (COGEN Europe Managing Director), representing the Coalition, told Commissioner Oettinger that energy efficiency should be the starting point for Europe’s energy and climate strategy.

‘Energy savings won’t happen automatically, we need political leadership and a market which rewards efficiency not consumption. Industry and NGOs are united in calling for the Commission to show real political leadership to move us to a new energy model which puts energy efficiency at its heart.’

The Coalition Portfolio: Financing Issues for Energy Efficiency

April 11, 2011

The Coalition portfolio proposes a range of measures to align both public and private financial instruments with the goal of realising a step change in financing energy efficiency in Europe. They focus on improving the availability of public as well as private capital needed to capture the deep reservoir of cost-effective efficiency improvements in homes and businesses, thereby achieving carbon reduction targets at the lowest total cost to the economy – while also serving Europe‟s high-level ambitions for efficient and sustainable economic growth, greater energy security, and new employment opportunities in job sectors that cannot be exported to foreign shores. The portfolio was introduced at a roundtable on financing energy efficiency on 7 April 2011.
